Text insertion & compatibility

Understand typing versus pasting, caret-aware spacing and why some destinations need manual delivery.

Choose an insertion method#

Open Settings → Activation → Insert text by. The setting changes how finished text reaches the focused app; it does not change speech recognition.

ModeSingle-line resultMultiline result
AutoTypes up to 400 characters; pastes when longer than 400.Always pastes.
TypeUnicodeTypes text using synthetic Unicode key events.Always pastes despite the selected typing mode.
PastePuts the text on the clipboard and invokes paste.Pastes.

Multiline results use the clipboard so line breaks are not simulated as individual Return presses. A terminal or unusual control can still interpret a paste in its own way. Review the destination before inserting commands or important text.

How caret fitting works#

When Fit the text to where it lands is enabled for the active mode, TawkType uses a small local window around the caret—up to 64 characters on either side—to make spacing and continuation capitalization fit.

  • A separating space can be added between adjacent words.
  • An existing neighbouring space can prevent a duplicate.
  • A capital introduced by cleanup can be relaxed when continuing a sentence.
  • A selected range is distinguished from an ordinary caret where the control exposes that information.

It is best effort. Unsupported controls fall back to normal insertion behavior. It does not take screenshots, read a whole document for this feature or send the caret context to Claude.

When typing is withheld#

TawkType records a destination identity and rechecks it before delivery. A changed foreground window, a control without a usable text target or an elevated app can cause a clipboard fallback instead of typing into an unintended destination.

A destination check cannot guarantee compatibility with every custom editor or distinguish every internal field change. If the status bar reports a copied result, use the dictation box or paste manually. Avoid repeatedly starting another recording to recover words that have already been transcribed.

Clipboard behavior to know#

Finish or save clipboard work you need before dictating through the paste path. TypeUnicode can reduce clipboard use for single-line text, but multiline results still paste. Explicit Copy actions intentionally replace the clipboard with the selected text.

Windows clipboard history, cloud clipboard sync and third-party clipboard managers have their own retention behavior. Disabling TawkType History does not clear copies already held by those tools or the destination app.

A quick compatibility check#

  1. Dictate one sentence into a simple editor.
  2. Repeat in the target app without switching windows during processing.
  3. If short text fails, try the other insertion method.
  4. For multiline text, use a harmless sample and check how the target handles pasted line breaks.
  5. If delivery remains unreliable, use the dictation box and paste deliberately.

If the result partially appeared, review the field before retrying. Recovery cannot safely erase or deduplicate text that another app may already have accepted.
